There is a common belief that healing is about returning to who we once were.

We long for the version of ourselves that existed before the heartbreak, before the loss, before the illness, before life changed us.
We tell ourselves:
“I just want to feel like myself again.”
Yet healing often reveals a different truth.
The person who began the journey is not the same person who completes it.
Healing is not always a return.
Sometimes it is a transformation.
The Myth of Returning to Normal:
When life wounds us, we naturally want relief from our pain. We want familiar ground beneath our feet. We want certainty. We want the comfort of what was.
But some experiences change us permanently.
Grief changes us, Loss changes us, Love changes us, Motherhood changes us, Illness changes us and so does Awakening.
These experiences do not simply pass through our lives. They become part of our story.
Trying to return to who we were can sometimes create more suffering, because we are measuring ourselves against a version of ourselves that no longer exists.
Healing Is Not Erasing:
Healing is not pretending something never happened.
Healing is not forgetting.
Healing is not becoming untouched by life.
Healing is learning to carry our experiences with greater wisdom, compassion, and understanding.
The scar remains, but it no longer controls the story.
The memory remains, but it no longer defines every moment.
The wound becomes part of our strength.
The Alchemy of Transformation:
Transformation asks a different question.
Instead of asking:
“How do I get back to who I was?”
Transformation asks:
“Who am I becoming?”
This shift changes everything.
The focus moves from restoration to growth.
From resistance to acceptance.
From surviving to evolving.
Like a tree that has weathered many seasons, we do not grow despite our experiences. We grow through them.
The storms leave their marks, but they also deepen our roots.
Honouring the Person You Were:
Transformation does not mean rejecting the person you once were.
That version of you carried dreams, hopes, strengths, and lessons that brought you to this moment.
They deserve gratitude.
But they do not need to be your destination.
Sometimes the most compassionate thing we can do is stop trying to become our former self and start welcoming the person who is emerging.
A New Kind of Healing:
Perhaps healing is not a journey back.
Perhaps it is a journey inward.
A journey toward greater authenticity.
Greater self-awareness.
Greater compassion.
Greater alignment with who we truly are.
The caterpillar does not return after becoming the butterfly.
The seed does not return after becoming the tree.
Nature does not move backwards.
Neither do we.
The invitation is not to become who you were.
The invitation is to become who you are meant to be.
✨ Healing may begin with a wound, but transformation reveals the wisdom that was waiting on the other side.✨
